It connects the driveshaft to the differential pinion shaft via a splined bore and uses strap-style retainers (half-round) to secure the universal joint. You would replace it if the splines are worn, the yoke is bent or cracked, or the U-joint bearing surfaces are damaged—issues that can lead to driveline vibration or failure.
