It transfers the pushing force from the brake chamber into rotational motion, spreading the brake shoes against the drum to slow the vehicle. When the cam lobes wear or the splines strip, the camshaft must be replaced to maintain even braking. This particular cam is built for a 1-5/8-inch diameter shaft with 37 splines and is the left-hand (driver-side) orientation.
