You replace it when the original light is damaged, burnt out, or when upgrading from incandescent bulbs to LED for lower power draw (0.06 amps) and longer filament-free life. The sealed polycarbonate housing fits a standard 2.5-inch rubber grommet (sold separately) and connects via a PL-10 plug.
