This is a split cotter pin (also called a split pin) used to prevent nuts from loosening on a bolt or to secure clevis pins and shafts.

It is designed to be inserted through a pre-drilled hole, then the two legs are bent in opposite directions to lock the assembly. A 10 mm diameter pin with 80 mm effective length is commonly used on heavier truck and trailer suspension pivot pins, wheel‑end castle nuts, and steering linkages. Replacement is needed when the pin becomes bent, corroded, or fails to keep the nut or pin securely in place.
