Great Dane is recalling 6,810 model-year 2027 Champion and Everest van trailers because the welds on the landing gear k-brace can fail and let the gear collapse. The campaign, filed with federal safety regulators in late October, carries a quieter second half that matters more to anyone who stocks trailer parts: 840 landing gear assemblies were recalled separately, because they were sold loose as replacement parts.
Owner letters have not gone out yet. Parts buyers are scheduled to hear on Dec. 18 and trailer owners on Dec. 22, which leaves several weeks in which a defective assembly can still be holding up a trailer nobody has flagged.
The defect followed the parts out the door
The trailer campaign, NHTSA 26V708, and the parts campaign, 26E074, describe the same failure: k-brace welds that may not hold, ending with the landing gear folding under load. The consequence regulators list is blunt — a collapse "increases the risk of injury."
The parts recall names one part number, A30300240001. That is the detail worth acting on, because a loose assembly has no VIN attached to it. It can be fitted to a trailer of any age, by any shop, and the trailer it ends up on will not appear on Great Dane's list of 6,810 VINs. The company estimates about 10% of the combined population actually carries the bad welds, and no injuries or warranty claims have been reported so far. But 10% of 840 assemblies is still roughly 80 landing gears in service with nothing tying them to a recall notice.
Wabash put the wrong grease in 475 wheel ends
A second trailer builder filed a related campaign a week earlier. Wabash is recalling 475 model-year 2027 van trailers over incorrect wheel bearing lubricant that can let the wheel end seize and lock the wheel — a handling loss at road speed rather than a drop in the yard. Unlike the Great Dane defect, Wabash expects most of the recalled trailers to have it. Dealers will replace the lubricant free of charge, with letters due Nov. 25.
Both defects land on brand-new MY2027 equipment, and both sit in running gear and support hardware that nobody thinks to inspect on a trailer fresh off the delivery truck.
What to check before the letters arrive
Pull the VINs on any 2027 Champion, Everest or Wabash van trailer you took delivery of this year and run them through the manufacturers' recall lookups now, rather than waiting on the mail. Great Dane's customer service line is 1-877-369-3493; Wabash's is 1-765-771-5404. Both remedies are free, so the only cost is the downtime and the labor to find out.
For the loose assemblies, go through your parts receipts and shelf stock for A30300240001 — that number is the only thread connecting this recall to a trailer that will never get a letter. If you replaced a landing gear in the past year and cannot tell what you bought, a cross-reference lookup shows what a part number supersedes and what else fits the same position.
In the yard, treat a parked 2027 Champion or Everest as suspect until it is inspected: put it on stands instead of trusting the landing gear alone, especially during loading or where a neighboring trailer can bump it. On the Wabash trailers, a wheel end running the wrong grease usually announces itself before it seizes — a hub that runs hot, a burnt smell, drag on a wheel that should spin free. If you are chasing those symptoms on a trailer that is not on either list, the failure-mode guides cover wheel-end heat and bearing diagnosis.
