ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Mack Trucks is recalling 3,096 Pioneer and Anthem tractors because the bezels around the top air intakes and the grille surround can work loose and come off the truck at road speed. The filing went to federal regulators Oct. 1 under campaign 26V631, Mack number SC0501.

The population is almost entirely Pioneer: 2,868 PR (4) tractors built between Oct. 22, 2024 and Sep. 18, 2026, plus 228 Anthem AN (4) units built from July 2, 2025 to Feb. 13, 2026. Mack estimates 6.1% of those trucks actually have the condition — roughly 190 vehicles — and reports no crashes or injuries from it.

A claim curve that ran 14 months before the recall

The paperwork is unusually candid about how long this took. Mack's safety office opened an investigative case on March 18, 2026 and recommended escalation the next day; the product safety committee asked for more information on March 25 and then went quiet until a second escalation on Sep. 14. The defect determination came Sep. 24.

By then Mack had logged 243 warranty claims and 95 field reports, according to the Part 573 report filed with NHTSA. The monthly breakdown tells the story: one claim in August 2025, 20 a month by February 2026, peaking at 42 in July. The trend was visible for most of a year before the campaign was called.

New parts at one end, cable ties at the other

The cause is assembly, not materials — fitment problems between the bezels and their mounting surfaces left the clip mechanisms inadequately engaged. The two halves of the remedy reflect that. Intake bezels get replaced outright with current part versions that have, in Mack's words, "improved clearance for clip towers." Grille bezels stay on the truck: dealers drill holes and run cable ties between the bezel and the grille for redundancy if a clip was never properly seated.

Part numbers matter here. The intake bezels in the remedy, 24159073 and 24159074, superseded the originals in production back in February 2026. Grille bezels run 24017443 and 24047960 in bright finish, 24017438 and 24017447 in graphite. Trucks still at the factory are on stop shipment until the grille bezel is corrected, Land Line reported.

What fleets should check this week

Dealers were notified Oct. 8 and VINs became searchable the same day, but owner letters are not scheduled until Nov. 30 — a seven-week gap you do not have to sit through. Run your Pioneer and Anthem VINs through the federal recall lookup now and book the ones that come back affected.

The filing also names a free inspection anyone can do at PM. A disengaged clip shows up as a slightly wider gap along the outboard edge of the bezel; add it to the walkaround on any Pioneer built in the two-year window, since a bezel that leaves the truck at 65 mph is someone else's windshield.

One sourcing note for shops that already fixed this out of pocket. If you bought an intake bezel before February 2026, the number on the shelf is the old version, not the remedy part — worth checking the interchange on those bezel numbers before you fit another one. Mixed Mack fleets sorting out which units are even in scope can look up model-year specs for the Pioneer and Anthem first; the Anthem window closes in February 2026, so later builds are clear.
