Aurora Rolls Out Second-Generation Driverless Trucks as the Industry Shifts From Proof to Production

Aurora Innovation has launched its second-generation driverless trucks, and the move says as much about where autonomous freight is heading as it does about one company's hardware. According to Truck News, the new platform is built to support a much larger commercial deployment across Aurora's U.S. freight network, marking a clear step from validated technology toward production scale.

The new trucks are based on the International LT Series and carry Aurora's next-generation autonomous driving hardware, which the company says is more powerful than the previous generation and engineered to last one million miles. Aurora plans to add them to a commercial network that already runs ten driverless routes across the U.S. Sun Belt, expanding capacity as it brings on new customers.

"Last year's driverless launch proved our technology could operate safely on public roads, and our new platform now provides the foundation to deliver at scale," said Chris Urmson, Aurora's CEO and co-founder, in the company's announcement. "Deploying our second-generation truck allows us to put hundreds of autonomous trucks on the road and ultimately into the hands of more customers."

The numbers behind the launch point to a business that is maturing quickly. Aurora began operating driverless Class 8 trucks on public roads in 2025, and its Aurora Driver system had logged nearly 440,000 driverless miles by the end of June 2026, per Truck News. To meet demand, the company has enlisted manufacturing partner Roush to install redundant vehicle systems and integrate its hardware, with a target production rate of 1,000 Aurora trucks a year by the end of 2026. Customer interest is scaling in parallel: Hirschbach Motor Lines recently announced plans to buy 500 Aurora Driver-equipped trucks, one of the largest autonomous fleet commitments by a U.S. carrier to date.

From milestone to marketplace

Aurora's rollout is the latest signal in a year that has moved autonomous trucking out of the demonstration phase and into commercial reality. The clearest marker came in late April, when Houston-based startup Bot Auto delivered what it described as the American trucking industry's first fully humanless, over-the-road commercial truckload. As reported by Axios, the 230-mile run between Houston and Dallas was not a pilot but a paid delivery to a customer's dock, completed with no one in the cab, no in-cab observer, and no remote driver in the loop.

Competition is intensifying across the Sun Belt. Kodiak AI, which became a public company in 2025, reported ten driverless trucks in operation and is targeting a long-haul driverless launch in the second half of 2026, according to Yahoo Finance. Kodiak has also expanded conventional autonomous freight runs, launching a regular Dallas to Houston route with Roehl Transport earlier this year, as covered by Heavy Duty Trucking.

The through-line across all three companies is the same set of economics. Autonomous trucks are not bound by the federal hours-of-service limits that cap human drivers at eleven hours of driving, and they do not face fatigue or the scheduling constraints that make tight overnight corridors difficult to staff. Those are exactly the lanes, such as the Houston to Dallas overnight run, where driverless operations are proving their value first.

Regulation catches up

For years, the biggest obstacle to scaling driverless trucks was not the technology but a patchwork of state-by-state rules. That is beginning to change. In February 2026, Representatives Bob Latta and Debbie Dingell introduced the SELF DRIVE Act of 2026(H.R. 7390), the first federal statute aimed at advancing autonomous vehicle regulation specifically for trucking, as reported by FreightWaves. A separate provision within the broader BUILD America 250 Act would establish federal safety requirements for commercial autonomous vehicles and could preempt some state and local regulation, according to Logistics Viewpoints.

If enacted, these frameworks would replace regulatory uncertainty with a national standard, giving carriers and technology developers the legal clarity they have long said they need to move autonomous freight from closed tracks to interstate commerce.

What it means for the parts supply chain

The takeaway from this year is that autonomous trucking has crossed a threshold. It is no longer a question of whether the technology works, but how fast it scales and how the rest of the freight ecosystem keeps up. Fleets adding hundreds of driverless trucks will run them harder, around the clock, on demanding corridors, and that changes the maintenance and parts picture. Trucks that never stop moving need parts sourcing that never slows down.
